Texas Inmate Search
How to Conduct an Inmate Search in Texas
The main source of inmate and jail information for the entire state is the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) which is in charge of managing offenders in state prisons, state jails and private correctional facilities that have contracts with the TDCJ. The agency is also responsible for the supervision of offenders released from prison on parole or mandatory supervision. From their site you can access an offender search. The database has records for offenders who are currently incarcerated in a TDCJ facility. You can search by name, TDCJ number, or SID (state identification) number.

The Texas Department of Public Safety also has an online search tool for your convenience. You can run a criminal history search on citizens throughout the state. Information contained in the database will show up only if a conviction has been reported to the Texas Department of Public Safety. This information can include arrests, prosecutions and dispositions of cases higher than a Class B misdemeanor.

The Texas Department of Public Safety also offers an online sex offender search. These searches allow the public to search the registry for sex offenders registered statewide in Texas. Note, that all information on registered individuals is based on information submitted by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the Texas Youth Commission, and various local criminal justice agencies so their database might not be complete.

If you want to do a search in person the best place to look is the local county sheriff. There are 254 counties in Texas and each county has a sheriff assigned to it's jurisdiction. The county sheriff acts as a Texas peace officer and enforces the laws of Texas in their county. They are responsible for the county jail, bail bonds, civil process, and security of the courts in their jurisdiction. The Sheriff's Association of Texas has an interactive county map with links to a list of active sheriffs categorized by county if you need such information.
